My Experience Using Okra Water with Garlic and Rosemary for My 4C Hair

If you’re in Kenya, chances are you’ve come across the okra water trend. For a while, it was all over social media, with people talking about its benefits—some for health, others for… well, let’s just say different reasons. But being the natural hair enthusiast I am, I was more interested in what okra could do for my 4C hair.

I love experimenting with natural ingredients, and after having success with my onion, green tea, and neem hair rinse, I decided to try an okra water mix. This time, I added garlic and rosemary to boost the benefits. My goal? To hydrate my dry 4C hair, strengthen it, and see if it would help with growth.

After using it for a while, I have to say—I’m impressed! Here’s everything I learned about using okra water with garlic and rosemary for 4C hair.

Why I Chose These Ingredients

I didn’t just throw things together for the sake of it. Each ingredient serves a purpose:

  1. Okra – Rich in mucilage (that slimy texture), okra is a powerhouse for moisture retention. It hydrates the hair and provides amazing slip, making detangling so much easier.
  2. Garlic – Packed with sulfur, garlic strengthens hair strands, reducing breakage and shedding. It’s also great for scalp health because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  3. Rosemary – A well-known hair growth stimulant, rosemary improves blood circulation to the scalp and helps with thinning or shedding. It also keeps the scalp healthy and free from dandruff.

This mix sounded like a winning combination for my hair, so I got to work!

How I Made My Okra Water Hair Rinse

Ingredients:

  • 6 okra pods, sliced
  • 1 clove of garlic, sliced
  • 1 fresh sprigs of rosemary
  • 2 cups of water

Method:

  1. I added the sliced okra, garlic, and rosemary to a pot with 2 cups of water.
  2. I let it simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes until the mixture thickened slightly.
  3. After cooling, I strained out the solids and poured the liquid into a spray bottle.

The result? A slightly slimy, herbal-smelling liquid that I was ready to test on my hair.

My Experience Using Okra Water on 4C Hair

1. Hydration & Softness

After spraying the okra rinse onto my hair, I immediately noticed how soft and moisturized it felt. My hair absorbed it well, and there was none of that dry, crunchy feeling I sometimes get after washing my hair with shampoo.

2. Amazing Slip for Detangling

One of my biggest struggles with 4C hair is detangling, but this rinse made the process so much easier! The natural mucilage from the okra gave my hair incredible slip, allowing my fingers and comb to glide through without excessive breakage.

3. Strengthened Hair & Less Shedding

After using the rinse for about two weeks, I noticed significantly less hair fall. The garlic seemed to be doing its job in strengthening my strands. My hair felt thicker and stronger, especially at the roots.

4. Healthier Scalp & Less Itchiness

I struggle with occasional scalp itchiness, especially when there’s product buildup. But after using this rinse consistently, my scalp felt cleaner and less irritated. The garlic and rosemary helped keep my scalp healthy and free from dandruff.

How to Use Okra Water for Maximum Benefits

Here’s how I used my okra water rinse for the best results:

  1. As a Detangler – Before styling, I sprayed it on my hair to make detangling easier.
  2. As a Pre-Poo Treatment – Sometimes, I used it before shampooing to help protect my hair from dryness.

I used it 2-3 times a week, and my hair stayed hydrated and manageable.

Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely! If you have 4C hair and struggle with dryness, breakage, or detangling, this rinse is worth a try. It’s easy to make, affordable (okra is cheap at the local market), and packed with nutrients your hair will love.

Of course, natural hair care is all about consistency. One or two uses won’t give you instant results, but with regular use, you’ll see improvements in moisture retention, scalp health, and even hair growth.

So, if you’re curious, give it a shot! You might just fall in love with okra water for your 4C hair, just like I did.
